A Quick Reference Guide to Unicorn Magic Unicorn magic is the most obvious type of magic. It enables them to control the environment around them, within a certain degree. The amount of magic that a unicorn can control and how well it can, depends usually on their special talent. According to the following conversation between Spike and Twilight Sparkle (Season 1, Episode 6, 'Boast Busters'), (most) unicorns have a limited amount of magic that coincides (that is, matches) with their special talent (so their cutie mark).
